13 Principle 1: Observe and Interact

14 The accumulation of experiences of observation and interaction build the skill and wisdom needed to intervene sensitively in existing systems and to creatively design new ones
To design requires that we are familiar with models generated by nature and humanity (past and present) and have an ability to visualise some new adaptations, variations or possibilities

15 Design thinking guidelines list
When observing be aware of assumptions, preconceptions and values
Look for connections and contexts, avoid reductionist thinking

16 Recognise leverage points where you can make a difference

17 Make the smallest intervention necessary
Avoid too much of a good thing

18 Weeds or pests may be indications of need for change, or of agents repairing damage, or of resources we fail to value

19 Resistance to radical change is common – vested interests in play
Can be a problem when surrounding environment is undergoing rapid change

20 Integration and cross fertilisation of ideas and concepts needed to deal with environmental crisis. Formal scientific education based on bottom-up reductionist thinking can get in the way
Education involved digesting lots of information within separate disciplines and to trying to apply it in real life. So even when solutions to a problem are known they are not applied.

21 Need to find more efficient ways for people to learn through observation and direct experience. Observational and innovation skills have to be re-invigorated and not restricted to ‘centres of excellence’ and ‘creative departments’

24 Scepticism and resistance to dogma are important
Adaptation to ‘energy descent’ depends on a balance of values, relative and relationship concepts, rather than crusades of good over evil or simplistic, universal solutions
