I decided to start a collection of absurdities in the current system after seeing an item on a planned nuclear fusion plant in France on the BBC4 World News last night (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/4629239.stm 17/2/06). Even the spokesperson for the environment was taking this seriously, saying that nuclear fusion would produce only (I think) a tenth of the waste. But the point surely is that the world has a brilliant source of nuclear fusion energy already – called the sun – and one capable of being tapped in various ways to obtain virtually unlimited amounts of energy without producing any waste. This plant is to be built on what is currently forested land, and those trees are engaged in trapping the sun’s fusion energy. To destroy those trees and then build the huge plant will result in the loss of a carbon sink and loads of CO2 being released from fossil fuels used in the construction. What this is all about is academic / scientific kudos and statist prestige – primitive masculine motives: think Pyramids and palaces.
